- Sites on Joomla 5: regular bug fixes ended on 13 October 2026 and security fixes end on 12 October 2027

- Sites on hosting with PHP 8.1 or 8.2, which Joomla 6 no longer supports

The update path to Joomla 6
Joomla cannot jump from 4 to 6 in one update. Each major version updates only from the last minor version before it, so the path has three steps. We run them all on the copy in one project.
- Joomla 4.x to 4.4. First the site goes to the latest Joomla 4.4 release.
- Joomla 4.4 to 5.4. The Pre-Update Check shows what is not ready for Joomla 5. During this update the Backward Compatibility plugin is switched on, so older extensions keep working while we update them.
- Joomla 5.4 to 6. Joomla 6 needs the Joomla 5 plugin “Behaviour – Backward Compatibility” switched off and “Behaviour – Backward Compatibility 6” switched on; the Pre-Update Check tests both. Then the site goes to the latest Joomla 6 release.
What each version needs
Joomla 4.4
PHP 7.2.5 or newer, MySQL 5.6 or newer. End of life since October 2025: no more security fixes.
Joomla 5
PHP 8.1 or newer; MySQL 8.0.13, MariaDB 10.4 or PostgreSQL 12 or newer. Security fixes only, until 12 October 2027.
Joomla 6
PHP 8.3 or newer (8.4 recommended) and MySQL 8.0.13 or newer. Bug fixes until 17 October 2028, security fixes until 16 October 2029.

How we work
All work happens on a copy of your site. Your live site keeps running until you approve the result.
- Review. We check the Joomla, PHP and database versions, the template and every extension, and tell you what can move, what needs a new version and what has to be replaced.
- Backup and copy. We take a full backup and set up a copy of the site on a subdomain or on our server.
- Server. We check that your host can run PHP 8.3 and a supported database for Joomla 6, and tell you what to ask your host if it cannot.
- Extensions. We read the Pre-Update Check and each developer’s own compatibility notes, since the check is a guide rather than a guarantee. Extensions are updated, replaced or removed, always agreed with you first.
- Upgrade, step by step. Joomla 4.4, then 5.4, then 6 on the copy, with debugging on, fixing database and PHP errors at each step.
- Template. We update your template to a version for Joomla 5 and 6, or set up a replacement.
- Test. We go through pages, menus, forms, logins, search and any shop or booking features, on desktop and phone.
- Your review and go-live. You check the copy. When you approve it, we move it to your live site and check it again.

Your template
Templates built for Joomla 4 often need a new version for Joomla 5 and 6. If your site uses one of our templates, we set up its current version: our Joomla templates are rebuilt for Joomla 5 and Joomla 6 on the Helix Ultimate framework. For another template, we check whether its developer has a newer version or suggest a replacement.

Questions and answers
Can I skip Joomla 5 and go straight to Joomla 6?
Not in the update itself: Joomla 6 updates only from Joomla 5.4, and Joomla 5 only from Joomla 4.4. We run every step on the copy in one project, so your live site switches only once, from Joomla 4 to Joomla 6.
Can I stop at Joomla 5?
You can, but Joomla 5 now gets security fixes only, until 12 October 2027. Joomla 6 has bug fixes until 17 October 2028 and security fixes until 16 October 2029, so most sites are better off going to 6.
Will my extensions work on Joomla 6?
It depends on each extension. We check every one in the review, using the Pre-Update Check and the developer’s own notes, and tell you which ones need an update or a replacement before we start.
My host runs PHP 8.2. Is that a problem?
For Joomla 6, yes: it needs PHP 8.3 or newer. Most hosts let you switch the PHP version in the control panel; we tell you what to change and when.

Is my site offline while you work?
