It’s me Kelvin from LTheme team!
As you know, Joomla! just released two versions
- Joomla 3.10.x
- Joomla 4 (now it’s 4.0.2 with some bug fixes)
I know what everyone’s thinking. Don’t waste your time more, I write this Technical Blog with a short important guide for this update, nothing else.
Backup first
Take any backup with Akeeba Backup Tool and Hosting backup to keep your website safe before update.
Update Process
Update to Joomla! 3.10.x (Recommended) and leave it work as stable, 2 years support.
“Joomla 3.10 is the bridge between the 2 major series. Joomla 3.10 stable will primarily be a release containing backports of API changes from the Joomla 4.0 development branch to help ease the transition to the next major release for the community. Joomla 3.10 will be supported for 2 years after it has been finally released.
Once your website is updated to 3.10, the pre-update checker will allow you to check the compatibility with the Joomla 4.0 minimum requirements in terms of the current hosting environment and, more importantly, your installed extensions. This will help you migrate to Joomla 4.0 smoothly.”
Joomla 3.10 is the stable version and it’s pre-version to upgrade to Joomla 4, our templates are fully compatible with this version, so you can feel free to run this update. This is a RECOMMENDED way for production websites.
By process update from 3.x to Joomla 3.10, you just go to Admin > Component > Joomla Update, this is a normal update and won’t have an issue. We tested all Joomla templates, it’s fully compatible with Joomla! 3.10.
Keep your Joomla! site runs on Joomla 3.10, it means you have a stable Joomla 3.x version and you can get more 2 years support from Joomla!. Joomla 3.10 is the Bridge to Joomla 4, so you can update to Joomla 4 easily, it’s just about time 🙂
Update to Joomla! 4 (hard work, must prepare your tasks carefully)
If you still want to work with Joomla 4, recommend you do it with test website first, not recommend for your client website this time. You can update our template to Joomla 4, follow steps:
1/ Update extensions
- Update Helix Ultimate 1.x to 2.x
- Update SP Page Builder to latest version
- Update SP Simport Portfolio
2/ Disabled unsupported extension
- K2 (this time, we don’t hear anything from K2 team, look like we have more back to Joomla article).
- other extensions that you have not get informed from author about Joomla 4 compatible issue yet.
3/ Update Joomla!
- Run update from 3.x to 3.10
- Run update from 3.10 to Joomla 4
4/ Joomla! 4 ready
After update, you will go to Joomla 4 with new fresh version and new Admin dartboard.
5/ Review new system
Recheck your theme options, main functions from your website.
6/ Issue and Restore
If you have an issue, try to search Joomla Community or Extension author blog posts. Otherwise, you can restore to the old version with Akeeba kickstart tool.
Use Joomla! 4 templates for new projects
Yes, if you’re going to build new project, recommend you with Joomla! 4, try it, you will see some different with UX from back-end on first time, but after some weeks you will love it. Check out Joomla 4 templates collection, we released many Joomla! 4 templates now.
Conclusion
For my personal suggestion, you just update your Joomla! to 3.10 and keep this version working this year. At The Beginning of next year, you can think about Joomla! 4 update.Â

Excellent blog, thank you for your update, Kelvin 😉
You’re welcome, we’re working hard to update Joomla! to 3.10 and latest Helix Ultimate 2.x, SP Page Builder/Quix at latest, template and quickstart package will come soon next week.
You’re right, Joomla! Team’s working hard to release Joomla 4, but actually it still has some bugs. End of this year or begin of 2022, it’s best time to think about this update.
Thank you @Steve, glad because Joomla! team released Joomla! 4, still bugs, but that’s great 🙂
That’s nice, Kelvin. I agreed with you recommended. I have 40 Joomla! websites, most of templates I bought from you, that’s great! No worry, I updated all websites to Joomla 3.10 without issues. For next project, I still stay with Joomla 3.10, I will think about this update next year. Be safe my friend 🙂
That’s nice Leo. If you have any query or need assistant next time, feel free let me know.
Thanks for the update Kevin. All clear.
Hi,
You’re welcome! Any questions or need more assistant, just let me know.
Total agreed with you @Kelvin, I tested Joomla! 4, still some funny bugs, special if we’re running in low PHP version such as 7.2.x or less than, even with PHP 7.4 or 8, still some error or warning from back-end, I’m not sure if I want to use it for our client, I want stable system, and it’s Joomla! 3.10.x.
Just forgot Joomla! 4 this time, we can think about it on next year when it’s more ‘stable’.
Hi,
Glad because our guide helped! Don’t worry, 1-2 months, we will have Joomla! 4 version for all designs from our team.
Thank you very much @Kelvin, short review about Joomla! version on this time that we think we will move to Joomla! 4 this time, but not, we will keep it on this year at latest.
But I hope your team will create Joomla templates at https://ltheme.com/joomla-templates/ with version for Joomla! 4, so we can test more first, then go with J4 on next year.
Thank you for your feedback!
Yes, we’re working hard, and will release Joomla! 4 version for all designs in end of this month (50%), and rest release will come with next month 🙂
Excellent article Kelvin, thank you very much for the information. I think I’ll wait until the end of this year to update to Joomla! 4.
You’re welcome 🙂
