Joomla 4 has come with us with its alpha version. Joomla community is getting so excited to explore more interesting new features and core functionalities in Joomla 4.From the version 2 to now, Joomla development team always tries their best to improve features and quality, so users can have the best experience. In today article, we are going to give you an overview of Joomla from version 2.5, 3.x to 4. Let’s enjoy it!
Installation process
It was completely complex to install Joomla 2.5. When we got Joomla 3, the installation process was much simpler with just 3 steps, however, UI was still not good enough.
In Joomla version 4, this version will solve all of these problems. The installation process of Joomla 4 is simplified more, the interface becomes more user-friendly with a beautiful appearance.
Bootstrap
As we know, Bootstrap is a library front-end which has CSS and HTML based responsive design templates for forms, typography, navigation, buttons and more interface components, JavaScript extensions. While Joomla 2.5 used the Twitter Bootstrap, Joomla 3 used the Bootstrap 2, Joomla 4 is going to be built with Bootstrap 4 which has released since January 2018. By the introduction of Bootstrap 4 in Joomla 4, the entire process will be more responsive and faster than it was before.
PHP requirement
Minimum PHP version requirement:
Joomla 2.5: from PHP 5.2.4
Joomla 3: from PHP 5.3
Joomla 4: PHP 7
This requirement somehow makes sure that we will have a faster and safer performance with many new interesting features of Joomla 4.
Code standard
Joomla development team has optimized code quality of Joomla 4, therefore, it will be much cleaner than Joomla 2.5 and Joomla 3. Based more to the core, Joomla 4 will offer a much better stability and performance (some functionalities have been rewritten by coding standard).
Frontend template
Joomla 2.5: Beez 3 front-end template
Joomla 3: 2 front-end templates
Joomla 4: Cassiopeia new front-end template (based on Bootstrap 4)
Admin backend
In Joomla 4, admin backend system structure is absolutely revolutionized. It did not perform its best with the problem of user-friendliness, therefore, Joomla 4 has focused to redesign admin backend, so users can have an outstanding user-friendly interface and more accessibility features.
Backend template
Joomla 2.5: Bluestork (default template), Hathor
Joomla 3: Hathor and ISIS (default template)
Joomla 4: Atum (built with Bootstrap 4 and SASS). The default template layout has got changed, so the entire menu is now on the left side, which is similar to WordPress!
SASS and LESS
Joomla 4 integrates SASS because Bootstrap 4 based on SASS, while previous versions of Joomla using LESS. With this change, Joomla 4 is promising to bring us a better performance.
Responsiveness
Joomla 2.5 and 3 template responsiveness is based on Bootstrap/Bootstrap 3, however, ultimate responsive performance was not really satisfied with Joomla users. Since Joomla 4 backend and frontend template based on Boostrap 4, responsiveness will be improved much.
Media Manager
The newest version of Joomla brings us a whole new media manager with some new features. Many useful functionalities in media manager of Joomla 2.5 and 3 have missed. The new media manager provides some new features like upload image by drag-drop, image edition to edit image through backend in spite of using tools.
Mootools
Mootools and jQuery Javascript libraries have been included in Joomla 3, in Joomla 4, Mootools will be deleted completely to prevent code conflicts and offer a better performance.
